Soft and Fluffy Naan Bread with Garlic Butter

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/3 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, yogurt, and egg. Add the frothy yeast mixture and mix well.
  3. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups of flour and salt to the wet ingredients, stirring to combine. If the dough is too sticky, add up to 1/2 cup more flour until it comes together and is soft but not sticky.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into a circle or teardrop shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until puffed and lightly charred.
  8. Mix the melted butter with minced garlic. Brush the garlic butter over the hot naan and sprinkle with chopped cilantro.
