Okay pineapple on pizza is a move, anyone else agree!? I honestly think it’s my favorite kind of pizza and this BBQ Chicken Pineapple Pizza is a new favorite over here. I always love to find different ways to use shredded crockpot chicken when I make it for the week! Honestly, this is one of my favorite naan bread recipes with chicken!

I hope you love it as much as I do!

By the way, if you’ve made a batch of shredded chicken just for this recipe, you need to check out my roundup of simple ways to use meal prepped crockpot chicken: you can check out that post for more ideas here!

What you need for BBQ Chicken Pineapple Naan Pizza:

Naan (either store bought or you can make your own), BBQ Shredded Crockpot Chicken, pineapple (fresh, but you can use canned in a pinch), red onion (chopped), BBQ sauce (your favorite brand is fine here), cilantro, and shredded mozzarella cheese (the type that grates or is shredded is easiest here, but feel free to use any easy melting cheese you have to hand!)

If you don’t have Naan to use, other great options would be:

  • wraps or tortillas
  • large pitta bread
  • cauliflower crust (which depending on your BBQ sauce will make this pizza gluten-free!)
  • a pre-made pizza base
  • make your own crust! (I love this one from Simple Mills)

What is the difference between naan and pizza dough?

Naan is an Indian flatbread made from white flour (sometimes whole wheat flour), yeast, milk, yogurt, salt, and ghee or cooking oil. When it comes to pizza dough, we see some similarities: white flour, yeast and salt are all used. However, pizza dough does not contain milk or yogurt and olive oil is typically used instead of ghee or cooking oil.

Naan is traditionally cooked in a tandoor oven at high temperatures, which means that it needs to be able to withstand extreme temperatures without burning. Pizza dough is usually cooked at much lower temperatures in a home oven or even stove top so it doesn’t need to be as robust as naan.

So what does this mean for the composition of each dough? The difference between the two seems to come down to the presence of dairy products in naan.

The difference is not in the ingredients. Naan and pizza dough have almost exactly the same ingredients: flour, water, yeast, and salt. The differences are in the proportions and how they are used.

Is naan and pita the same?

Both are leavened flatbreads made with wheat flour. Both are usually baked in an oven or over a fire (as opposed to being fried). Both can be used to scoop up other food and eaten that way.

But pita is not very soft; it’s more like a roll than naan is. Naan is softer and fluffier. Pita is more crusty on the outside, while naan has a harder crust than the inside of the bread. Pita tends to be thicker than naan too, because it’s made of two layers which separate when the dough rises, forming a pocket for stuffing with falafel or other foods. Naan does not have pockets like pita does.

Naan is made from wheat flour and water, usually with some yeast to make it rise. The dough is kneaded, allowed to rise, and then baked in a tandoor, which is a type of oven used in India. It’s generally eaten warm with a variety of different curries or meat dishes, but there are other ways to eat it as well.

Pita is also made from wheat flour, but it can be baked without yeast and without any kind of rising agent at all.

Can I add any other toppings?

Sure! Canned corn would go really great with the BBQ sauce & the pineapple! If you’re looking to up the veg content thinly sliced mushrooms would also be delicious on top.

Ingredients

  • 2 naan flatbreads
  • 1/2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup bbq sauce
  • 1 cup shredded bbq chicken
  • 1/2 cup pineapple, chopped
  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1/3 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (see note)
  • red pepper flakes

Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
    2. Top with minced garlic with oil.
    3. Place in the oven to bake on the middle rack for 5 minutes.
    4. Remove from the oven and top with shredded mozzarella cheese, bbq chicken, red onion and pineapple.
    5. Place in the oven to bake for 5 minutes on middle rack before transferring to baking sheet for remaining 5 minutes.
    6. Top with cilantro and red pepper flakes and drizzle with more bbq sauce.

Notes

Keep an eye on the naan as it will burn. You may want to add it to baking sheet for remaining 10 minutes instead.

I like mozzarella, but you can use any cheese that melts well.

Minced garlic comes in the jar from Trader Joes so it has a little oil with it too.

until next time…
